Maps of the Erased

This embroidery series made with half-cross stitch and traditional Ukrainian technique “white on white“ depicts 8 towns of Ukraine’s East that have been erased to the ground by russia since the beginning of its full scale invasion in 2022. The lines taken from the topographic maps represent streets and squares, houses and parks, schools and hospitals, museums and churches - not existing in the reality anymore. The names of the towns - Avdiivka, Bakhmut, Kreminna, Mariinka, Pokrovsk, Rubizhne, Toretsk, Vovchansk - now symbols of destruction and war crimes - are woven into the embroidered lines structure, thus becoming one with the towns’ ghostly bodies.
